Touriga Nacional – Portugal's noblest red grape
Touriga Nacional is considered the royal grape variety of Portugal – the aromatic backbone of great Port wines and increasingly the star of outstanding dry red wines. Origin: Douro and Dão
Its home is the steep slate terraces of the Douro Valley in northern Portugal as well as the somewhat cooler, granite-influenced Dão region. For a long time, Touriga Nacional was primarily known as one of the most important Port wine grapes. For a few decades, however, winemakers have also been producing grandiose dry red wines from it, which count among the best in the country.
Because it produces small, thick-skinned berries with lots of color and aroma, it is now also appreciated outside of Portugal – for example in Australia, South Africa, Brazil, and California.
Taste profile: Violets and dark fruit
Touriga Nacional is intense and multi-layered. Characteristic is its beguiling floral bouquet – violets and a hint of bergamot – over a core of blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum, supplemented by licorice, spices, and fine minerality. Firm, ripe tannins and a supporting acidity give the wine backbone and aging potential for many years. As a Port wine, it shows its sweet, concentrated side.
