About Niepoort Vinhos

From Dutch port wine merchants to Douro legend

The history of Niepoort begins in 1842, when the Niepoort family moved from Holland to Vila Nova de Gaia and founded a port wine estate there. For five generations, the company remained in family hands — initially as a classic trading house that bought base wines in the Douro, aged them in Gaia, and marketed them as port. Dirk van der Niepoort drove the transformation into an independent winery when he joined the family business in 1987. In the same year, the family acquired the historic Quinta de Nápoles in the Cima-Corgo sub-district on the left bank of the Têdo river — an estate that dates back to 1496 in documents. In 1988, the Quinta do Carril followed, located directly above Nápoles. Today, Dirk and his son Marco Niepoort continue to run the house together in the sixth generation.

Spontaneous fermentation, lagares, and biodynamic conviction

Niepoort's philosophy is rooted in one principle: infusion instead of extraction. Grapes are traditionally trodden by foot in open granite basins, the so-called lagares, spontaneously fermented, and then gently aged, mostly in used wooden barrels. The goal is tension and freshness — not a dark block of jam. This is supplemented by earlier harvest times, which ensure acidity and liveliness. In the vineyard, Niepoort works organically on over 80 hectares in the Douro; large parts of the property are managed biodynamically. This craft applies consistently to both sides of the house: for the classic ports as well as for the dry table wines, which now make up the larger part of production.

Beyond the Douro, the family has specifically invested in cooler regions: the Quinta de Baixo (Bairrada, with the Baga grape) as well as the Quinta da Lomba (Dão, on granite) stand for wines with taut acidity and aging potential. In the Minho region, the Vinho Verde, Niepoort works with its own vineyard areas and local producers.

Elegance as a stylistic device — from port wines to Nat'Cool

What connects Niepoort's wines across all categories is a Burgundian fundamental idea: power that does not push itself to the fore. The dry Douro red wines rely on old field blends of local varieties such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Amarela — minerality and salinity instead of a pure fruit bomb. The ports — Vintage, Colheita, Tawny — mature in the historic warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia and stand for artisanal precision over decades. Alongside this is the Nat'Cool line: light, low-intervention wines in the striking liter bottle, which are intended to be uncomplicated to drink without sacrificing depth. They are partly created in collaboration with other producers — an expression of Dirk's conviction that wine lives from exchange and openness. Whether port, Douro red wine, Bairrada Baga, or Vinho Verde Loureiro: Niepoort does not deliver a style copy, but always a reading of the respective terroir.
