Niepoort Fabulous Douro Reserva DO

The Fabelhaft Reserva is Niepoort's plea for the Douro as a red wine region: complex, mineral, yet surprisingly accessible.

Niepoort is one of the defining names of the Douro Valley. The Dutch-Portuguese family house, based in Porto since 1842, has significantly shaped the region's transformation from a pure port wine stronghold to one of the most exciting terroirs for dry red wines. The Fabelhaft stands for this attitude: no compromises on character, but no unnecessary heaviness.

In the glass, it shows a dark ruby red. On the nose, ripe blackberry and cassis, underneath a clear note of wet slate and black pepper. 20% of the wine matures in French barriques — this gives it a fine wood spice without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the tannins feel silky and well-integrated, the acidity fresh and balanced. The finish is long with a mineral aftertaste.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Pairs well with lamb shank with rosemary, aged Manchego, or duck breast with dark cherry sauce.
