From a post-war idea to a family business in the Southern Palatinate

The small village of Walsheim lies between Landau and Neustadt an der Weinstraße, embedded in gently rising vineyards of the Southern Wine Route. Here, after the Second World War, Karl Pfaffmann founded the winery that still bears his name today. What began as a sideline alongside livestock and agriculture was consistently pushed forward by Karl Pfaffmann: in 1955, he bottled his first own wine — the starting signal for an independent winery. Before that, it was common in the Palatinate to hand over grapes or bulk wine; the own bottle was a commitment to quality.

In 1968, the business focused entirely on viticulture, and in 1974 a modern press house was built. Today, grandson Markus Pfaffmann runs the winery in the third generation — together with his brother Helmut, his wife Sigrid, and the whole family. Markus Pfaffmann studied viticulture and cellar management at Geisenheim University and has been active in the cellar and vineyard since 1998. The in-house vinotheque in Walsheim invites visitors to get to know the wines directly at their place of origin.

Sustainable soil work, yield reduction, and modern cellar

Markus Pfaffmann focuses on careful, sustainable soil care — with the declared goal of preserving the vitality of the vineyards for future generations. Since 2015, the winery has been a certified member of Fair'n Green, a sustainability program that combines ecologically responsible management with fair cooperation with employees, customers, and suppliers. In the vineyard, the principle of consistent yield reduction applies: the vines are heavily thinned out until the beginning of ripening, so that only a few, completely healthy grapes with maximum aroma intensity go into the harvest.

In the cellar, the winery works with a wide range of instruments. For aging, both 225-liter barrique and 500-liter tonneaux barrels as well as stainless steel tanks are used — depending on the grape variety and the intended style. The result is a quality line that ranges from accessible everyday wine to cellar-worthy reserve wines. For the harvest, the family regularly brings friends and customers into the vineyards — a ritual that Pfaffmann consciously cultivates to pass on the passion for viticulture.

Broad range, clear style: Burgundy, Riesling, and reds from Southern Palatinate sites

Around 30 hectares of own vineyard area, up to 60 hectares in total under cultivation, more than 20 grape varieties — the Pfaffmann wines come from clearly defined sites: Walsheimer Silberberg, Knöringer Hohenrain, Nußdorfer Herrenberg, Gleisweiler Hölle, and Böchinger Rosenkranz. The soils change between loam-loess, limestone, and red sandstone and give the wines a different basic structure depending on the site. The focus is on the Burgundy varieties Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc as well as Riesling — around three-quarters of production are white wines.

In addition, the red wines are convincing: the Pinot Noir Grand Réserve and the Cuvée Lara — a barrique-aged blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with 24 months of wood aging — show how well the Southern Palatinate sunshine suits international varieties. The Chardonnay sparkling wine Brut as well as the reserve wines under the Pauline and Charlotte label round off the picture. The winery has received multiple awards, including the Federal Honorary Prize and ratings in the Gault Millau.
