Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.

Matthias Gaul Winery – Northern Palatinate at the highest level

Some wineries tell their story best through a single year: 1956. That year, Matthias Gaul's grandfather bottled the family's first wine in Grünstadt-Asselheim – a Müller-Thurgau. What began modestly has developed over four generations into one of the most remarkable wineries in the Northern Palatinate. In the 1970s, his father, Werner Gaul, made a decisive shift: he systematically specialized the mixed farm in viticulture and switched from selling wine in bulk to marketing it as bottled wine. In 1995, after completing his studies in Geisenheim and spending time abroad, Matthias Gaul joined the family business, officially taking it over in 2003. Since then, he has elevated the winery to a whole new level.

Style and philosophy

Matthias Gaul is not a winemaker who settles for the obvious. He has planted vineyards with a high density of 15,000 vines per hectare – a density more commonly found in Burgundy than in the Palatinate. On the estate's highest vineyard, 300 meters above sea level , Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir grow on pure limestone bedrock. The result is wines with tension, length, and a precision that is anything but commonplace in this region.

In his cellar, he has around 550 barriques and 120 stainless steel tanks at his disposal – a sign that Gaul makes a targeted choice between wood and steel depending on the wine and vintage, rather than adhering to a single dogma. Approximately 280,000 bottles are produced annually, distributed across a clearly structured range of entry-level wines, village wines, single-vineyard wines, and white and red blends.

Awards that count

The wine magazine VINUM awarded Matthias Gaul the title "King of Pinot" in its 11/2017 issue – an accolade that perfectly encapsulates his reputation as a Burgundy specialist. He has also won two German Red Wine Awards: in 2015 with the Pinot Noir Steinrassel and in 2017 with the Pinot Noir Asselheim. Anyone familiar with these wines knows that these awards are well-deserved.

The region: Northern Palatinate, where it gets cooler

Grünstadt-Asselheim lies at the upper end of the German Wine Route – where the protection of the Haardt Mountains ends and the climate becomes noticeably harsher. Winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate that slows down and prolongs the ripening of the grapes. Anyone who loves Pinot Noir knows what this means: more acidity, more aromatic complexity, more potential. The soils are predominantly calcareous, and the vineyard sites evoke a sense of history – St. Stephan, Schloss, and Goldberg in Asselheim, as well as Sonnenberg in Mühlheim.

More than half of the 35 hectares are planted with Burgundy varieties: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Meunier. The range is complemented by Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Scheurebe. Since the 1990s, Gaul has also cultivated international red varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot – and since 2005, Tempranillo as well. This demonstrates the breadth of his vision.
