What does the wine pair best with?
It harmonizes well with asparagus, light vegetable dishes, and salads, but also with fish and seafood. The exotic fruitiness also makes it an uncomplicated companion for the grill — especially with chicken or shrimp.
At what temperature should I serve it?
Best at 7–10 °C — then the Scheurebe unfolds its aromatics completely without appearing too fleeting. Served too warm, it quickly loses its freshness.
Is this a sweet Scheurebe?
No, the Herr Gaul Weiß is dry. The Scheurebe grape variety often appears sweeter than it is due to its distinct fruitiness — in fact, it has a dry structure with 11.5% ABV.
How long can I keep the bottle after opening?
Well-sealed in the fridge, an aromatic white wine like this keeps for one to two days. Since the Scheurebe is very fragrant, it is worth drinking it as fresh as possible — the aromas are most lively on the first evening.
The Winery
Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with its first bottled wine.
At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eistal valley provide a cool microclimate, he grows mainly Pinot varieties on 35 hectares – partly in high-density planting at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone rock.
VINUM named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he won the German Red Wine Prize twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir tastes why this is no empty award.
