Matthias Gaul Tempranillo

Matthias Gaul's Tempranillo is a red wine for those who are curious — about a grape variety with Spanish roots, interpreted with the cool precision of a Rheinhessen winemaker who knows exactly what he is doing.

In the glass, it shines a deep ruby red with violet reflections. The bouquet opens with ripe cherry, blackberry, and plum, along with violets, Mediterranean herbs, and a delicate hint of tobacco. With a little aeration, spicy notes of black pepper, subtle toasty aromas, and a mineral depth emerge, distinguishing this wine from many southern examples of its variety.

On the palate, it is powerful but never heavy. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, the acidity lively and harmonious—the result is a wine with real substance and clear definition. Aging in used barriques adds subtle spice and texture without masking the fruit.

Goes perfectly with:

  • Roast lamb or beef with a herb crust
  • Mature cheeses such as Manchego or strong mountain cheese
  • Braised game or lentil dishes with smoked sausage

A wine that shows that Rheinhessen no longer knows any boundaries.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
