Aroma: The nose is filled with fruity and spicy aromas. Besides cherries, plums, and wild berries, the typical oak notes and spicy aromas of tobacco and cocoa are particularly noticeable. Taste: On the palate, the Edizione Cinque Autoctoni is very full-bodied and substantial. Powerful tannins coat the mouth, and the high alcohol content, along with notes of vanilla and chocolate, conveys a sense of warm sweetness. The idea for this wine originated at a curious meeting between "wine experts": Valentino Sciotti, now CEO of the Fantini Group; Filippo Baccalaro, Chief Winemaker of the same group and a third-generation Piedmontese winemaker; Hugh Johnson, the world's most famous wine journalist; and Jean Marc Sauboua, a third-generation Bordeaux winemaker. At this special meeting 18 years ago, Hugh Johnson challenged the two young winemakers to create a "great wine" with the character of "Southern Italy," forged from the finest grape varieties of the region; a wine modestly named "table wine," but with the soul of a "great wine," distinguished by its ability to be unique and far superior to what the market offers. How does the Cinque Autoctoni taste – is it rather fruity or spicy?

Both, with a clear structure: cherry, plum, and forest berries meet tobacco, cocoa, and vanilla from barrique aging. The tannins are powerful, the finish warm and long – a full-bodied red wine with Southern Italian character.

What does the wine pair best with?

It is made for hearty dishes: braised beef or lamb, pasta with ragout, salsiccia from the grill. It also cuts a fine figure with aged Pecorino – the tannins need fat and spice as a counterweight.

At what temperature do I serve it?

Between 16 and 18 °C. At warmer temperatures, the alcohol (14.5% ABV) quickly seems heavy – better to take it out of the cool cellar 30 minutes before drinking than to pour at room temperature.

Is the 2024 ready to drink or should I store it?

Due to the barrique aging, it is more accessible than many young red wines with similar tannin structure, but one to two years of storage will still do it good. The fruit opens up, the wood notes integrate better.

How many grape varieties are really in it – and which ones?

The name "Cinque Autoctoni" stands for five Southern Italian grape varieties, including Primitivo as the main variety. Which other four varieties are blended in the current vintage is not publicly disclosed by the Fantini Group – that is part of the concept.

How do I store the opened bottle?

Well sealed and kept cool, it lasts two to three days once opened. Because of the high alcohol content and the dense structure, it remains stable longer than lighter red wines – a vacuum stopper extends the time window.
