Cococciola
Cococciola is a white grape variety from Abruzzo that was almost forgotten for a long time and is now experiencing a renaissance. Its origins lie primarily in the provinces of Chieti and Teramo, where it thrives on calcareous soils and under the influence of a Mediterranean climate . What makes it so special is its unmistakably vibrant, high acidity, which lends it exceptional freshness . In the glass, it presents a pale straw-yellow color and offers enticing aromas of citrus fruits such as grapefruit and lemon, green apples, juicy pears, white blossoms, and a hint of almond . On the palate, it is dry, light-bodied, and lively, often with a fine minerality and a clean, lingering finish. . Its moderate alcohol content and crisp acidity make it an ideal accompaniment to seafood, grilled fish, light pasta or fresh goat cheese.

Cococciola – an ancient grape variety from Abruzzo
Cococciola is one of the oldest indigenous white wine grapes in Central Italy, which hardly anyone knows outside of Abruzzo. At Vinoscout, you will find two wines made from this variety – as a still white wine and as a sparkling wine – starting from 8.95 euros.
Origin & character
The variety is native to Abruzzo, where it is primarily grown in the coastal plains and the hills around Chieti. Cococciola naturally possesses a lively acidity, which makes it particularly suitable for sparkling wine production. In the glass, it shows light citrus notes – lime, green apple – and a floral undertone reminiscent of acacia blossom. The body remains lean and fresh, the finish clean and pleasantly dry. Still white wines made from Cococciola lack any heaviness; they are meant to be drunk young and work best well-chilled.
Pairs well with
- Grilled fish and seafood, especially clams or shrimp
- Light antipasti, bruschetta with tomatoes or goat cheese
- Creamy pasta with lemon and herbs
- As an aperitif, if you want to serve something lesser-known

Both wines come from producers in Abruzzo who consistently put the variety in the spotlight – including a sparkling wine from Fantini and a still white wine from Ulisse. If you are looking for something distinctive from Italy beyond Pinot Grigio and Trebbiano, Cococciola is a good starting point.
