Quick answers

What makes Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso special as a grape variety?

Refosco is one of the oldest grape varieties in Friuli and stands out due to its deep color, lively acidity, and firm tannins. In the glass, it shows dark forest berries, blackberry, and a characteristic spice — powerful, but without heaviness.

Which dishes does Refosco pair best with?

Refosco can handle powerful flavors at the table: game dishes, lamb ragù, grilled beef, or aged hard cheeses from Northern Italy. It also pairs well with mushroom risotto or polenta with braised vegetables.

How does Refosco differ from other Italian red wines like Sangiovese or Montepulciano?

Refosco comes from the northeast of Italy and brings a cooler, more tart fruit than the Tuscan or Central Italian varieties. Less cherry, more blackberry and plum — plus a distinctive acidity that makes it particularly food-friendly.

At what temperature should Refosco be served?

Best between 16 and 18 °C. Too cold, and the tannins seem hard; too warm, and the fruit loses its freshness. Half an hour in the refrigerator shortly before pouring is often enough in the warmer months.

Where can I buy Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso?

We carry our selection of Refosco in our online shop as well as in our flagship store in Berlin — with direct import from Friuli. Those who would like to taste the wines before buying are very welcome in the store.

Is Refosco a wine for aging or is it better to drink it young?

That depends on the aging process. Simpler variants aged in steel tanks show their strengths with lively fruit and fresh acidity. Barrel-aged cuvées develop more depth with time — a look at the product description will give you the best hint.

Refosco – powerful red wine from the northeast of Italy

Refosco is one of the most characterful indigenous grape varieties in Italy and is still a real insider tip in German-speaking countries. At Vinoscout, you will find a small, hand-picked selection of this variety from Friuli and the Veneto.

Origin & Character

Refosco has been rooted in the northeast of Italy for centuries, especially in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the adjacent areas of the Veneto. The variety produces deep ruby-red wines that stand out due to a pronounced tannin structure and lively acidity. Aromatically, Refosco moves between dark berries – blackberry, blueberry – and spicy notes of black pepper and violets. With some aging, earthy and slightly bitter hints often develop, which give the wine depth and length. Those who appreciate Barbera or Sagrantino will find pleasure in Refosco.

Pairs well with

Braised beef and game ragù
Hearty pasta with meat sauce or mushrooms
Grilled lamb chops with herbs
Mature hard cheeses like Montasio or Pecorino stagionato
Cold cuts and salumi from the region

Buy Refosco at Vinoscout

Whether you are looking for the Refosco from Pierpaolo Pecorari or the Bosco del Merlo Rosso Selection – both wines come from the northeast of Italy and show how much personality this variety brings with it. A small but worthwhile selection for all those who want to drink off the beaten red wine path.
