Origin & Character
The variety was crossed in the 1960s in Württemberg from Trollinger and Riesling and has since proven itself primarily in cool locations. Represented in the range are two very different regions of origin: Saale-Unstrut in eastern Germany, one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe with a continental climate, as well as South Tyrol, where Kerner finds special freshness and precision at altitudes above 700 meters. In the glass, the variety typically shows aromas of peach, grapefruit, and white flowers, carried by a lively, Riesling-like acidity. The style remains clear and straightforward – not a heavy, opulent wine, but one that combines tension and drinkability.
