Glera – the soul of Prosecco
When you enjoy a glass of Prosecco, you have Glera in the glass: this Northern Italian white grape is the basis of almost every Prosecco. Until 2009, the grape itself was called "Prosecco" – since then, it has borne the name Glera, while "Prosecco" denotes the protected origin. Light, sparkling, and always in a good mood, it is the perfect wine for carefree moments. At Vinoscout, you will find over 55 Prosecco and Glera sparkling wines, from uncomplicated everyday pearls starting at 2.49 euros to fine Spumante from the best sites.
Origin: Veneto and Friuli
Glera is at home in the northeast of Italy – around Treviso, in the wide Prosecco DOC area between Veneto and Friuli, and in the premier class Conegliano-Valdobbiadene DOCG. On their steep hills, cultivated by hand, the finest and most complex representatives are created, while the lowlands supply the fresh, uncomplicated everyday Proseccos.
Glera is vinified almost exclusively as a sparkling wine according to the Martinotti or Charmat method: the second fermentation takes place in a pressure tank and thus preserves the primary, fruity-floral aromatics of the grape – unlike the Champagne method, which relies on yeast and aging aromas.
Taste profile: fresh, floral, light
Glera sparkling wines are light, sparkling, and accessible. Typical are aromas of green apple, pear, citrus, and white flowers, carried by a fine perlage and moderate acidity. Depending on the dosage, the spectrum ranges from bone-dry (Brut) to the classic Prosecco style (Extra Dry) to a delicate fruit sweetness (Dry). In addition to the sparkling Spumante, there is also the more gently sparkling Frizzante – both share their carefree, lively nature.
Food recommendations: Glera at the table

- With finger food: Prosciutto, olives, breadsticks, and antipasti.
- With light dishes: fish, seafood, sushi, and fresh salads.
- For dessert: a Dry or Demi-Sec with fruit and fine pastries.
