Those who engage with it discover red wines with real substance: dark fruit, powerful tannins, and a spicy, earthy depth that hardly any other variety delivers in this form. Well-made Carignan does not need to shy away from comparison.

Where Carignan is at home

The variety feels at home in southern France – in the Languedoc, for example, where it often serves as the backbone of cuvées or, as a single variety, shows what is in old vines. Carignan appears at least as convincingly in Sardinia, where it matures under the name Carignano del Sulcis DOC into independent, characterful wines. Warm climate, barren soils, lots of sun – these are its conditions.
