Gran Muralles
The Grans Muralles from Familia Torres is more than just a red wine from Catalonia — it is the result of decades of work to bring almost forgotten grape varieties back to the vineyards. Since the 1980s, Torres has been cultivating the ancient Catalan varieties Garró and Querol in the D.O. Conca de Barberà, complemented by Cariñena, Garnacha, and Monastrell. It takes its name from the medieval walls of the Poblet Monastery that surrounds the vineyards.
The sites around the monastery are located on a cool plateau with slate and granite soils — conditions that give the wine structure and depth. Aged in steel tanks, it shows blueberry, dried flowers, and a hint of nutmeg on the nose. On the palate, dense but silky tannins, ripe red fruit, and a long, spicy finish. It is worth giving it some time in a decanter before pouring.
Pairs with leg of lamb with herbs, braised beef cheeks, or mature Manchego. Drinking temperature: 16–18 °C.
