Origin and production – what makes whisky whisky

During the subsequent mashing, hot water is added – and here the quality of the water plays a decisive role. After fermentation with special yeasts, the mash is distilled and then stored in wooden barrels. Barrel maturation is the key to character: Ex-bourbon barrels bring vanilla and coconut, sherry barrels give dried fruits and chocolate, port wine barrels impart red berry fruit.
