Bowmore – the first documented distillery on Islay, founded in 1779. One of the oldest in Scotland. Islay single malts are known for their smoky character – and Bowmore is no exception. What makes it special? It malts its own barley, still using skills passed down through generations. One of the few distilleries still producing barley malted on the floor. Manually turned with traditional wooden malt shovels. The water of the Laggan River imparts a light peat note, while the island's rich peat heats the still. The result: a perfectly balanced single malt. Islay as it should be.

Bowmore was founded in 1779, making it the first documented distillery on Islay – an island off the west coast of Scotland renowned for its peaty single malts like few other regions in the whisky world. The water comes from the River Laggan, which flows through deep peat layers, imparting its character to the distillate from the very beginning.

What still sets Bowmore apart from most other distilleries is that it still malts its own barley on traditional malting floors, turning it by hand with wooden malting shovels. This practice, which has almost completely disappeared in the industry, gives the whisky a depth and consistency that is virtually impossible to achieve industrially. The peat used to fuel the still comes directly from the island.

The result is whiskies that combine smoke and salt air with a remarkable balance – never overpowering, but clearly defined by their origin. Whether young and straightforward or aged for decades: Bowmore embodies Islay character with conviction.
