Blauburger
Blauburger is a young, exciting grape variety from Austria, bred in 1923 by Fritz Zweigelt at the Klosterneuburg Wine Institute – a cross between Blauer Portugieser and Blaufränkisch. Its name is a tribute to the place of its origin, where it was common to give crossbreeds the ending "-burger". What makes it so special is its intense, deep dark color, which is almost black, which is why it is often used as a "teinturier" to enhance the color of paler wines. In the glass, it has an enticing aroma of red currants, raspberries, cherries, and a hint of violets. On the palate, it is fruity, full-bodied and velvety with soft, mild tannins and a harmonious acidity – an approachable, uncomplicated red wine that goes perfectly with grilled meat, pizza or a cozy evening with friends.

Origin & character
Blauburger was created in the 1920s at the Klosterneuburg Wine School as a cross between Blaufränkisch and Portugieser. Today, it grows primarily in the Weinviertel, where deep soils give it structure. The variety brings a powerful, deep color to the glass and shows aromas of dark berries – blackberry, plum – often accompanied by a hint of spice and soft tannins. The style is usually straightforward and accessible, with enough substance for short cellar aging. In South Tyrol, where Blauburger occasionally appears under the name Pinot Nero or in cuvées, the wine takes on a bit more freshness and acidity due to the alpine climate.
