Falanghina – classic white Southern Italian wine from Campania
Four Falanghina wines from Campania are available at Vinoscout, including bottles from Vesevo, Villa Raiano and Joaquin – starting at 6.95 euros. The variety is one of the oldest grape varieties in Southern Italy and has been experiencing a well-deserved renaissance for several decades.
Origin & character
Falanghina is an indigenous white grape variety from Campania, the region around Naples and the volcanic cone of Mount Vesuvius. Historians suspect that it was already cultivated in antiquity – possibly as the basis for the legendary Falernian wine of the Romans. In the glass, it appears fresh and aromatic: ripe citrus fruit, white peach, sometimes a hint of chamomile or acacia blossom. The acidity is lively but never aggressive, the body medium-weight with a slightly mineral finish. Steel tank aging is the standard – it preserves the fruit freshness and makes the wines young and easy to drink. Those who know Falanghina from the Beneventano appreciate its straightforwardness: no wood, no heaviness, but clear fruit and length.
Pairs well with
- Grilled calamari or shrimp with lemon
- Neapolitan Pizza Margherita
- Light pasta with seafood or zucchini
- Fresh goat cheese or mild buffalo mozzarella
- Steamed vegetables and summery antipasti
