Tinta Barroca is one of Portugal's most important red grape varieties, boasting a deep color, ripe fruit, and a velvety texture. In the glass, it unfolds dark berry fruit – blackberry, black cherry, cassis – which, when aged in oak barrels, often blends with notes of chocolate and spice. On the palate, it is powerful yet supple , with soft tannins and a pleasant richness.
Its home is the Douro Valley , where it is one of the most important varieties for the production of port wine , but it also shines as a standalone red wine. Tinta Barroca – a quiet strength in the Douro Valley
Tinta Barroca is one of the classic grape varieties of the Douro Valley in Portugal and has played an important role there for generations – especially in blending for port wine. The variety brings fullness, softness, and a certain accessibility that makes it a valued partner for more powerful, tannin-rich varieties. Vinified as a single varietal, it shows itself as a round, full-bodied red wine with dark fruit and pleasant warmth.
Two worlds, one grape variety
Besides Portugal, Tinta Barroca has also taken root in South Africa, where it is known under the name Tinta Barocca.
