Lambrusco – the sparkling red from Emilia
Lambrusco is no ordinary red wine. It sparkles, it glows in a rich ruby red, and it simply puts you in a good mood. The off-dry to sweet style was long frowned upon – wrongly so. Because a real Lambrusco brings lively fruit, a fresh acidity, and a fine perlage that make it one of Italy's most uncomplicated wine pleasures.
Character and taste
Depending on the style, Lambrusco ranges from bone-dry and berry-tart to soft and fruit-sweet. The dry variants – often labeled as "Secco" or "Dry" – show dark berry fruit, a lively perlage, and a pleasantly tart finish. The sweeter versions, the classic "Amabile", are rounder, more pleasing, and ideal for those who like it a bit gentler. Besides that, there are also white Lambrusco interpretations with a light shimmer and slight sweetness.
Origin
Lambrusco comes from Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy – a region known for its lush cuisine and uncomplicated zest for life. The Grasparossa variant from Castelvetro is considered particularly full of character.
