Vernatsch
Vernatsch is South Tyrol's secret wine soul – light, fresh, and irresistibly easy to drink. Its pale ruby color hints at what awaits you: a red wine with delicate aromas of cherries and wild strawberries, soft tannins, and a lively acidity that makes it the perfect companion for relaxed evenings. Especially as a St. Magdalener, it displays a bit more body and depth, while remaining elegant and approachable.
Vernatsch grapes thrive in the sunny vineyards around Kaltern, Bolzano, and Merano , where they have shaped South Tyrol's wine culture for centuries. At Vinoscout, you'll find seven carefully selected Vernatsch wines priced between €8.95 and €19.90 – from uncomplicated everyday wines to characterful single-vineyard wines that showcase the true personality of this often-overlooked variety.

Vernatsch – light red wine from South Tyrol
Vernatsch is the classic red wine variety of South Tyrol: uncomplicated, easy-drinking, and deeply rooted in the wine culture of the region. In the shop, you will find seven wines, from simple entry-level to old vines and single-vineyard wines – from 8.95 euros.
Origin & Character
Vernatsch has been growing for centuries around Bolzano, at Lake Kaltern, and in the classic zone of St. Magdalener – two of the best-known designations of origin for this variety. The vine loves warm, well-ventilated hillside locations and produces wines there that surprise with their lightness: light ruby red, with little tannin and lively acidity. Typical are aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry, and a hint of violet, sometimes supplemented by a subtle almond note in the finish. Old vines and special locations – like the examples from the Gschleier or from single barrels – show that Vernatsch can also develop depth and structure. Basically, the rule is: drink young, served slightly chilled it unfolds its full charm.
Pairs well with
- South Tyrolean bacon and cold cuts
- Pasta with light tomato or vegetable sauces
- Grilled poultry and light meat
- Mild soft cheeses and Taleggio
- Summer antipasti and appetizers
