Cannonau
The Italians swear by it – and once you've tasted it, you'll understand why: Cannonau is the pride of Sardinia. Under the hot Mediterranean sun, grapes ripen here, producing wines of impressive depth and warmth. In the glass, it appears dark and inviting; on the nose, ripe cherries, dark berries, and the spicy herbs of the maquis – full-bodied, full of character, and unmistakably Mediterranean.
Cannonau is genetically related to the Spanish Garnacha , but has developed a very distinct identity in Sardinia. The island is considered its true home, and it is here that the most expressive interpretations of this grape variety are created. At Vinoscout you will find 13 Cannonau wines from Sardinia – from accessible entry-level wines starting at €7.95 to ambitious bottles for up to €80.00.

Cannonau – the soul of Sardinia in a glass
Cannonau is Sardinia's great red wine variety – and one of the most characterful in the entire Mediterranean region. The wines appear full-bodied and warm, with ripe red fruits, Mediterranean herbs, and a spicy depth that tastes unmistakably of the island. The tannins are present but velvety; the finish is long and lingering. Once you have drunk a good Cannonau, you understand why the Sardinians are so proud of it.
One variety, one island
Cannonau grows almost exclusively on Sardinia, where it has been at home for centuries. Whether it is related to the Spanish Garnacha or vice versa – ampelographers are still arguing about that today. What is certain: on Sardinia's barren, sun-drenched soils, the variety develops an independence that distinguishes it from all other Grenache relatives. The designation Cannonau di Sardegna DOC protects this origin.
