Argiolas Costera Cannonau di Sardegna
The Costera is Argiolas' most approachable red wine — and yet anything but uncomplicated. Cannonau, Sardinia's most important red grape variety, demonstrates here why it has been cultivated on the island for centuries.
Argiolas has been rooted in Serdiana, in southern Sardinia, since the 1930s and is one of the wineries that have significantly shaped the international reputation of Sardinian red wines. The Costera is made from Cannonau grapes, which undergo a three-day cold maceration after harvesting—a process that gently extracts color and tannins from the grape skins. The wine then matures for two years in Slovenian oak barrels, which are less dominant than French or American oak and allow the fruit to take center stage.
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color with violet reflections. The nose offers aromas of ripe blackberry, dried plum, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, velvety, well-integrated tannins, medium acidity, and a long finish with a spicy, slightly earthy note—typical of Cannonau.
