Argiolas Merí Vermentino di Sardegna

Vermentino from the heart of Sardinia — mineral, aromatic, with the typical bite of the island.

Argiolas is one of Sardinia's most influential wineries. The family from Serdiana in the Parteolla Valley has cultivated native grape varieties for generations and has significantly shaped the Vermentino wine on the island. Their Merí is an accessible entry point into this grape variety: vinified with a clear structure and fermented at 10–12 °C with the exclusion of oxygen to preserve its delicate aromas.

In the glass, it displays a clear straw yellow color. The nose offers aromas of lemon zest, white blossoms (wisteria), and a hint of thyme—Mediterranean herbal notes reminiscent of the Sardinian maquis. On the palate, it is fresh and light-bodied, with lively acidity and a spicy, slightly bitter finish typical of Vermentino, which makes it so versatile at the table.

  • Food: Grilled sea bass, seafood pasta, burrata with tomatoes or light vegetable dishes
  • Temperature: 8–10 °C
  • Ready to drink: Drink now, freshly bottled

James Suckling's 92 points underline what the wine shows in the glass: uncomplicated character with genuine origin.

In detail

How does the Argiolas Merí Vermentino di Sardegna taste?

The Argiolas Merí Vermentino di Sardegna tastes dry, fresh, and mineral, with Mediterranean herbal spice. On the nose, it shows lemon zest and white flowers, above all wisteria. Added to this is a hint of thyme. This spice is reminiscent of the macchia, the typical shrub landscape of Sardinia.

On the palate, the Merí appears light-footed. A lively acidity carries it and keeps it lean. With 13% vol, it still has enough substance for the dinner table. In the glass, it glows in a clear straw yellow.

Argiolas ferments the Vermentino with the exclusion of oxygen at 10 to 12 °C. This preserves the fine aromas. The finish is spicy and slightly bitter. This tart note is typical for Vermentino and makes the wine versatile at the table. The Merí is the winery's accessible entry into this grape variety.

What does the Argiolas Merí Vermentino di Sardegna pair with?

The Argiolas Merí Vermentino di Sardegna pairs with fish, seafood, and light Mediterranean cuisine. Try it with grilled sea bass or pasta with seafood. Risotto, antipasti, and burrata with tomatoes are also good partners. The citrus freshness picks up the acidity of the tomatoes. The herbal spice combines with olive oil and roasted aromas from the grill.

The Vermentino also works beyond Italian cuisine. With sushi and light Asian dishes, its lively acidity brings freshness to the plate. With salad, soup, and vegetable dishes, it remains unobtrusive. With goat cheese, the spicy-tart finish keeps up well.

The Merí has its strongest time in the warm season. It fits on the terrace, for a barbecue evening with fish, or for a long summer meal with many small plates. Serve it at 8 to 10 °C. Served too cold, the herbal and floral aromas recede. The bottle is sealed with a natural cork, so have a corkscrew ready.

The Winery

Argiolas

Argiolas – the cradle of the Sardinian wine renaissance. Founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas in Serdiana, the 230-hectare winery is managed today in the third generation by his grandchildren. Antonio was ahead of his time: larger vineyard areas, focus on quality.

With oenologist legend Giacomo Tachis as a consultant, the sons invested in modernization. Only indigenous grape varieties are cultivated – many almost forgotten. Vermentino, Cannonau, Monica, Carignano – the Mediterranean climate gives them ideal conditions.

The highlight: Turriga, regularly awarded 3 glasses in the Gambero Rosso. Sardinian, elegant, international. Over 2 million bottles annually – Sardinian wine culture for the world.
