Gray Souvenir
Souvignier Gris is a young, exciting grape variety from Germany, bred in 1983 at the Freiburg Wine Institute and belonging to the family of so-called PIWIs – fungus-resistant vines that require significantly less plant protection and are therefore considered particularly sustainable. Its grapes have a characteristic grey-pink color and are remarkably resistant due to their thick skin and loose structure. In the glass, it delights you with a diverse array of aromas reminiscent of ripe pears, juicy apples, citrus fruits, and sometimes exotic notes of passion fruit – often underpinned by a subtle spicy note and an elegant minerality. On the palate, it reveals a lively, fresh acidity reminiscent of Riesling and a smooth texture, making it a wonderful accompaniment to fish, poultry, or light vegetable dishes. A wine with a future.

Souvignier Gris – fungus-resistant new breed with character
Souvignier Gris is one of the most exciting PIWI grape varieties of recent years: fungus-resistant, aromatically independent, and significantly easier to care for in the vineyard than classic varieties. In the shop, you will find two wines from the Kaiserstuhl, both from the Schmidt winery, starting at 6.99 euros.
Origin & character
Souvignier Gris was bred in the 1980s at the Geisenheim Research Institute and is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner – with Souvignier as the umbrella term for the entire line. The variety ripens early, tolerates damp autumns better than many classic white wine vines, and has established itself in Germany, especially in warmer locations like the Kaiserstuhl. In the glass, it usually appears in a strong golden yellow, sometimes with a slight copper tone. Aromatically, it moves between ripe quince, peach, and a spicy, slightly nutty undertone – depending on the aging, also with floral hints. The texture is often full-bodied, the acidity moderate, and the finish pleasantly long.
Pairs well with

- Creamy pasta with mushrooms or pumpkin
- Spicy soft cheeses like Munster or Limburger
- Asian cuisine with a light sweetness, e.g., Thai dishes
- Grilled vegetables and quiches

Both wines come from the Schmidt winery in the Kaiserstuhl – including the classic Souvignier Gris and the Lösskindl, which bears the typical loess soil of the region in its name. A good introduction to the world of PIWI wines, without compromising on enjoyment.
