Jean-Marc Lafage is a seventh-generation winemaker – his family has been growing wine in Roussillon for over two hundred years. Even as a child, he helped in the vineyards; at twelve, he knew he wanted to become an oenologist, and later became one of the youngest in France. Together with his wife Eliane, also an oenologist, he traveled half the world – from South Africa to California to Australia – before the two returned to their Catalan home in 1995 and built their own winery around Perpignan, Canet-en-Roussillon, and Maury. Their home is the Mas Miraflors, a 15th-century Catalan country house that is now the heart of one of Roussillon's most well-known wineries.

What makes Roussillon so special is its mosaic of terroirs – and that is exactly where Lafage's greatest strength lies. His vineyards stretch from the foothills of the Pyrenees to the coast of the Mediterranean: steep terraces with old vines, schistous soils along the Agly, calcareous alluvial soils near the coast, and wind-swept plateaus in the hinterland. Native varieties such as Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan grow on these very different sites – many of the vines are over fifty years old. Three examples show the range particularly impressively: "Cayrol," a powerful Carignan from the Vallée de l'Agly; "Grenache au cube," a grape variety from three regions full of sour cherry and silky tannins; and "Miraflors Rosé," the perfect freshness kick for hot days. Whether fruit monster or elegant drop – at Lafage, you will find wines with real character.

About Domaine Lafage

Seven generations of Roussillon — from grape grower to export brand

The roots of Domaine Lafage date back to 1798. For generations, the Lafage family supplied their grapes to the cooperatives of Roussillon — a common path at the time in a region known primarily for its Vins Doux Naturels. Jean-Marc Lafage, seventh generation, broke with this: He studied oenology in Montpellier and decided early on to turn the family estate into his own terroir-driven winery. Together with his wife Eliane Salinas Lafage, also a trained oenologist, he traveled through South America, California, South Africa, and Australia, working at the Gallo research facility and in Australian wineries, among others. In 1996, the couple took over the parental business — then around 25 to 30 hectares — and began to consistently align the range with dry appellation wines. Today, the winery covers around 160 hectares, spread across several sub-regions of Roussillon, and exports its wines to over 40 countries. The company is based at Mas Miraflors, a 15th-century Catalan country house between Perpignan and Canet-en-Roussillon.

Terroir mapping, regenerative agriculture, and minimal water usage

What distinguishes Lafage from many other large estates in the south is the scientific precision with which the vineyard and cellar are managed. Jean-Marc and Eliane have mapped their entire vineyard area through in-depth soil and subsoil studies — with the goal of precisely adapting cultivation methods to each micro-terroir type. In the vineyard, the Domaine relies on agroforestry, permaculture, and eco-grazing; sensors on the vines measure sap flow to use irrigation only when it is ecologically sensible — according to Jean-Marc, actual water consumption is significantly below the regional average. These approaches are tested in collaboration with the University of Montpellier and are considered a model for the viticulture of tomorrow in the water-sensitive Mediterranean region. In the cellar, the same principle of restraint applies: white wines and rosés mature in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruit; red wines are predominantly aged in concrete tanks, with oak used sparingly and purposefully so that fruit and minerality set the tone.

Three terroir zones, 15 grape varieties, a broad spectrum of styles

The heart of Lafage's philosophy is the diversity of its sites. The vineyards are divided into three complementary zones: Les Aspres at the foothills of the Pyrenees with slate and marble soils and old terrace vines; the alluvial limestone soils of the plain between Perpignan and the Mediterranean, where the Tramontane wind and sea influence shape Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Mourvèdre for fresh rosé wines; and the Agly Valley with its black marl-slate soils, which give Muscat, Grenache Noir, and Carignan that opulence and authenticity that define the region's traditional Vins Doux Naturels. Across all zones, the Domaine cultivates around 15 grape varieties — including vines that are over a hundred years old. The focus is on Grenache in all three colors (Noir, Blanc, Gris), supplemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Marsanne, and Roussanne. The range extends from floral, accessible white wines like the Côté Floral to structured cuvées like Bastide Miraflors and Arqueta, and finally to the aged, oxidative Ambre Hors d'Âge — the amber Vin Doux Naturel that embodies the house's centuries-old tradition. Harvesting is done almost exclusively by hand.

Domaine Lafage –
Roussillon from seven generations

Domaine Lafage is located in the heart of Roussillon, at the foot of the Pic de Canigou – where the Mediterranean climate meets old schist terraces and steep slopes. Jean-Marc Lafage, a seventh-generation winemaker, knows these vineyards like almost no one else: when to harvest, how long to macerate, how to age – he decides this with a flair that has been sharpened over decades.

At his side is Eliane Lafage, an oenologist and wine expert who is responsible for the cellar. Together, they work with native varieties that hardly anyone else uses so consistently elsewhere: Grenache from three different sites, Carignan from the Vallée de l'Agly with deep roots in old schist, Mourvèdre for structure and depth. The wines clearly carry this origin – dense fruit, firm but silky tannins, a finish that reminds one of dried herbs and warm stone.

Whether the powerful "Cayrol" with lamb ragout, the multi-layered "Grenache au cube" with aged cheese, or the fresh "Miraflors Rosé" on a long summer evening – the Domaine Lafage range covers a wide spectrum without losing its individuality.
