Gérard Bertrand

From family winery to the world's largest biodynamic producer

Born in Narbonne in 1965, Gérard Bertrand grew up literally among the vines: his father Georges took him to the first grape harvest at the Domaine de Villemajou in the Corbières in 1975. At the same time, he developed into a professional rugby player – he spent 17 years as a winger for RC Narbonne, won the French Cup, and occasionally wore the national jersey. When his father died in an accident in 1987, Gérard took over the family estate at the age of 22 and began to develop the legacy with fighting spirit and ingenuity. Since the official founding of the Gérard Bertrand brand in 1992, the company has grown from four hectares to one of France's largest independent wine empires, with 17 estates today and over 850 hectares of vineyards in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

Biodynamics as a conviction, not a marketing strategy

The impetus for biodynamic agriculture came from an engagement with the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. From 2002, Bertrand began to consistently switch to biodynamic cultivation, starting at the Domaine de Cigalus – without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, but with compost and manure from his own farms and a work schedule strictly aligned with the lunar and solar calendar. Today, all estates are Demeter-certified; Gérard Bertrand is thus considered the world's largest producer of biodynamic wines. The logic behind this is clear: only if the vineyard lives in balance with its soil can it transfer the full expression of its terroir into the grape. In the cellar, this results in minimal intervention – what grows consistently on the slopes needs few corrections in the cellar.

Château L'Hospitalet near Narbonne is the company headquarters, winery, and cultural anchor point all in one: the La Clape peninsula with its limestone soils and direct Mediterranean influence provides the basis for the Grand Vin cuvées. Alongside this are such diverse sites as Clos d'Ora in the Minervois La Livinière, Domaine de l'Aigle in the cooler Limoux, or Château La Sauvageonne in the Terrasses du Larzac – each estate with its own character, its own soils, its own style.

Stylistic diversity of a century-old terroir

The range reflects the entire breadth of the Languedoc-Roussillon: powerful, tannin-rich red wines from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from the Corbières and Minervois, mineral-salty white wines from Limoux, where the higher altitude and Atlantic influences give the Chardonnay noticeable freshness, fruit-forward rosé wines, as well as the sweet Banyuls Vin Doux Naturel from the slate terraces directly on the Mediterranean. Common to all wines is their rooting in the terroir: no polished, uniform wines, but concrete statements of place – from the steep terrace to the wind-exposed plateau. The trade magazine Wine Enthusiast named Bertrand European Winery of the Year in 2020; the International Wine Challenge had already named him Red Winemaker of the Year in 2012. Anyone who drinks Gérard Bertrand's wines holds a piece of Southern France in their glass – consistently produced biodynamically, by a man who has shaped his region like few others.
