Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is one of the most idiosyncratic indigenous grape varieties of Friuli — dark, tannin-rich, with a striking acidity structure that clearly distinguishes this wine from international varieties. Livon's Riul shows what the eastern hills of Friuli can get out of this variety.

Livon is an established family winery based in San Giovanni al Natisone, which has been one of the best-known addresses in the Colli Orientali del Friuli for decades. The Tenuta vineyards are located on typical soils of marl and clay — the so-called flysch rock of the region, which gives the wines a mineral basic tension.

In the glass, the Riul shows deep ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, blackberry, blueberry, and a hint of dried herbs, plus a subtle earthy note. On the palate, firmly structured tannins, lively acidity, and a long, slightly tart finish — typical for the grape variety and not a flaw, but its trademark.

Best served at 16–18 °C, ideally opened an hour beforehand. Pairs well with braised beef, game dishes, Pecorino, or hearty pasta ragùs from Friulian cuisine.
