Matthias Gaul Pinot Noir Asselheim

Matthias Gaul Pinot Noir Asselheim – this is not a wine that modestly stays in the background. This red from the Palatinate won the German Red Wine Award in 2017 and demonstrates what top German winemakers can achieve with Pinot Noir when location, craftsmanship, and passion come together.

The single vineyard site of Asselheim lies on calcareous soils that give the Pinot Noir exactly what it needs: minerality, structure, and the prerequisites for true depth. Matthias Gaul works the grapes by hand, vinifies gently, and gives the wine the time it deserves. The result is a Pinot Noir with elegant red berry fruit, subtle spice, and a body that maintains a remarkable balance of power and finesse.

Serve it at 16 to 18 °C – then it unfolds its full spectrum of aromas. It is particularly harmonious with:

  • Game dishes such as venison roast or wild duck
  • Lamb chops with herb crust
  • Mature cheeses such as Comté or Brie de Meaux

A wine that sparks conversations and makes evenings memorable.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
