Matthias Gaul Riesling Terrain Calcaire

The Matthias Gaul Riesling Terrain Calcaire is a Riesling for everyone who knows that great wine begins in the soil. Matthias Gaul, one of the unsung heroes of the Palatinate, lets his vines root in stony limestone soils – and you can taste exactly that in every sip.

The vines are over 25 years old and therefore produce correspondingly low yields. The minerality absorbed by the roots in these soils is directly transferred to the wine: intense, precise, and distinctive. The harvest is done by hand – no detail is left to chance.

In the glass, this is a fresh, elegant Riesling with lively acidity and an immediately captivating bouquet. Apple, peach, lime, and a hint of gooseberry – fruity, but never overly sweet. The minerality is soft and integrated, not harsh.

  • Origin: Palatinate, limestone soils
  • Grape variety: Riesling
  • Hand-harvested, old vines (25+ years)
  • Style: fresh, sleek, mineral

Drink it with fish dishes, light poultry, or a good goat cheese. It also makes an excellent aperitif – served chilled in a slender Riesling glass, without any fuss.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
