Matthias Gaul Chardonnay Asselheim

Chardonnay from the Palatinate, which neither strives for Burgundian imitation nor for light summer wine appeal — but goes its own way: strong, yet fresh, with clear origin.

Matthias Gaul cultivates vineyards around Grünstadt in the northern part of the Palatinate. The single vineyard site Asselheim features calcareous soils that give the Chardonnay a mineral undertone—a counterpoint to the barrique aging, which lends the wine structure and depth without masking it.

In the glass , aromas of ripe yellow pear, butterscotch, and a hint of citrus zest are revealed. On the palate, it is full-bodied, the oak notes remain integrated, and the acidity keeps the weight in balance. The finish is long and slightly spicy.

Great 2019 with aging potential

Sophisticated Chardonnay, the 2019 is still a bit boisterous. Maybe better to let it store for another 1-2 years so that the barrique nuances become a little smoother.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
