Matthias Gaul Mr. Gaul red

A red wine for the evening that doesn't need much preparation – the Herr Gaul Rot from Matthias Gaul combines accessibility with real character.

Matthias Gaul is at home in Kindenheim in the northern Palatinate, a region with a warm continental climate and loess soils that provide red wine vines like Pinot Noir and Merlot with even ripeness and aromatic density. The cuvée of both varieties plays on the best of both halves: the fresh acidity structure and fruit depth of the Pinot Noir meets the velvety fullness of the Merlot.

In the glass, the wine opens with aromas of ripe cherries and blackberry, behind it a quiet tone of citrus zest and dried herbs. On the palate, it shows medium body with soft, well-integrated tannins – no sharp pressure, but a round finish with subtle spice. The acidity remains lively enough to give the wine freshness without appearing intrusive.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
