Matthias Gaul Maison Blanche Chardonnay

Matthias Gaul Maison Blanche Chardonnay
Matthias Gaul's Maison Blanche is a white wine from Rheinhessen that impresses with its French flair and Rheinhessen precision. Those seeking white wines with substance and depth – rather than pleasing lightness – will find what they're looking for here.
In the glass, it shines a bright golden yellow with greenish reflections. The nose is clear and complex: ripe pear, white peach, and citrus fruit mingle with floral notes and a delicate herbal spice. Depending on the vintage, subtle hints of brioche or hazelnut emerge – an indication of the careful use of oak.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet precise. Well-integrated acidity provides freshness and vibrancy, while a creamy texture adds richness and length. Matthias Gaul employs a combined aging process: partly in oak barrels, partly in stainless steel – this preserves the aromatic clarity, while lees aging contributes additional complexity and depth.
- Origin: Rheinhessen
- Aging: Wooden barrel and stainless steel, fine lees aging
- Character: fruity, creamy, mineral, subtly spicy
Maison Blanche pairs perfectly with poultry in cream sauce, pasta with truffles, mature soft cheese, or grilled fish . If you prefer to enjoy it on its own, it should be served at around 10–12 °C – this is when it unfolds its full range of aromas.

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
