Matthias Gaul Riesling stone rattle
The Matthias Gaul Riesling Steinrassel is not a wine you simply drink—it's one you understand the longer you listen to it. Winemaker Matthias Gaul from the Palatinate region vinifies this terroir wine from a vineyard that literally lives up to its name: the old Mühlheim Sonnenberg vineyard is so full of stones that they rattled under the tilling equipment. This stony subsoil is no accident, but rather a deliberate design choice—it shapes every sip.
In the glass, this Riesling reveals itself as densely structured and possessing genuine depth . The aromas range from fresh grapefruit and vibrant citrus notes to a hint of ripe peach—fruity, but never cloying. What distinguishes this wine is the interplay of fruit, rounded body, and a pronounced minerality that immediately recalls the stony soil of its origin. Not an artificial stylistic device, but true terroir.
This Riesling is a particularly compelling accompaniment to substantial dishes : fish in butter sauce, scallops, creamy risottos, or a mature Comté cheese are ideal partners. It also shines when paired with Asian cuisine—such as Thai curry or dim sum. Those who enjoy it on its own should allow it some time in the glass. It opens up, and what unfolds is well worth the patience.
