Product description

Nine Sauvignon Blancs, exclusively from Germany — that sounds like a clear statement. This pack shows what this grape variety can achieve on German soils when winemakers take it seriously: from the Palatinate to the Rheingau and down to the Southern Palatinate, on limestone, loess, and gravel, vinified by estates that have grown with the variety. No New Zealand, no Loire comparison necessary — nine bottles that speak for themselves.

The tone is set by Markus Schneider with his Kaitui — the name is a deliberate bow to Marlborough, but the grapes grow on cool limestone soils in the Palatinate. Citrus zest, gooseberry, ripe yellow melon, long finish. Schneider shows that the Palatinate can offer this grape variety conditions similar to New Zealand's South Island: good drainage, mineral character, slow ripening. A wine with attitude.

Those who know the Rheingau think of Riesling first — Weingut Künstler proves with their Sauvignon Blanc Kalkstein that limestone has something to say to this variety as well. Kiwi, gooseberry, a distinct hint of flint. No green sharpness, but finely chiseled fruit with mineral depth. For decades, the estate has stood for varietal white wines that clearly reflect the soil — and they succeed here.

From Laumersheim, one of the best sites in the Palatinate, comes the Philipp Kuhn Sauvignon Blanc Tradition dry. Limestone, loess, and gravel give the wine mineral tension that supports the fruit without masking it. Kuhn is one of the producers who recognized the potential of the variety in the region early on — the result is a structured, aromatically clear wine with real depth.

The remaining six wines in the pack — including the fresh and fruity Kaisermantel Sauvignon Blanc dry from Dr. Koehler in Rheinhessen, the lively Southern Palatinate wine from Matthias Gaul, the herbal Beisiegel Sauvignon Blanc dry from the Nahe, the mineral Reichsrat von Buhl Sauvignon Blanc from Deidesheim, as well as the two Pfaffmann interpretations from Roschbach — show the entire spectrum: from uncomplicated everyday freshness to mineral-precise wines with depth.

Pairs well with: Asparagus with hollandaise sauce, grilled sea bass with herb butter, goat cheese, Asian dishes with cilantro and lime, or a simple dinner with good bread and olives. Serve all wines well-chilled at 10–12 °C.

Nine bottles, one theme, many answers: This pack is suitable as a structured introduction to German Sauvignon Blanc, for a tasting evening with friends, or as a supply for the summer. Anyone who has only known the variety from New Zealand or the Loire will have to re-evaluate a few things here.
