CALOW is a Berlin-based startup founded in 2020 by Benno Orschulik and Markus Diekmann with the mission of reimagining Spritz. The inspiration came from Barcelona: a drink that was far too sweet and the personal desire to enjoy it in a lighter and more mindful way, without completely abstaining from alcohol. The result is a ready-to-drink fruit wine Spritz with 6% ABV, no added sugar, and up to 70% fewer calories than classic aperitifs – produced at a partner winery in the Palatinate/Rheinhessen region, vegan, and gluten-free. CALOW – Spritz reimagined

It was a summer evening in Barcelona that started it all. Benno Orschulik, then an MBA student, had a drink in his hand that was far too sweet – and wondered why there wasn't a light, honest alternative. In 2020, he and Markus Diekmann founded the Berlin-based startup CALOW with a clear mission: to reimagine Spritz.

What initially sounds like a personal discomfort actually resonates with a broad audience. Under the banner of "Smart Sipping," a movement is growing that seeks low-alcohol alternatives – not out of abstinence, but out of conviction. CALOW is designed precisely for these people: for everyone who consciously wants to reduce their alcohol consumption without sacrificing enjoyment or social interaction.

What's in the bottle?

CALOW is a ready-to-drink spritzer made with fruit wine , enriched with natural flavors and delicate bubbles. At 6% ABV, it's significantly lower than classic aperitifs – and contains up to 70% fewer calories . No added sugar. All varieties are also vegan and gluten-free .

CALOW is produced and bottled at a partner winery in the German wine region of Pfalz/Rheinhessen – one of Germany's most traditional wine regions, known for its fruit-forward, approachable styles. It's no coincidence that CALOW originates there: the region's wine expertise is incorporated into the quality of the fruit wine base.

Style and taste

CALOW does not follow a uniform style. The four varieties in the range are deliberately positioned differently and appeal to different tastes:

Raspberry-Elderflower: fruity-floral, gentle and balanced – the most approachable variety in the range.
Grapefruit-Lime: fresh, subtly bitter with a clear citrus note – for those who like it more lively.
Blueberry basil: berry-like, slightly tart and tangy – the most surprising combination
Peach and ginger: juicy, fresh and subtly spicy – summery and uncomplicated

That there is more to these varieties than just a clever concept is also confirmed by the renowned wine magazine Falstaff: CALOW Grapefruit-Lime received 93 points , CALOW Raspberry-Elderflower 92 points – both in the aperitif category (6%).
