About Weingut Philipp Kuhn

From a family business to a Northern Palatinate reference address

The roots of the Philipp Kuhn winery date back to the 17th century — the family has been farming its vineyards in Laumersheim for more than three generations. For a long time, the business was a typical Palatinate multi-sector farm, where viticulture was only one of several agricultural pillars. The decisive break came in 1992: Philipp Kuhn took over sole responsibility for the cellar and vineyard from his father at just 20 years old. From this early start, he developed one of the most dynamic businesses in the region in just a few years.

The path to the top was consistent: plots in first-class sites were specifically purchased, yields were reduced, and the focus was placed entirely on quality. In 2008, he was admitted to the VDP — Kuhn was the first member to have previously gone through the VDP talent program. Since then, the winery has belonged to the top group in the Palatinate, nationally awarded with the German Red Wine Prize and the German Riesling Prize, among others.

Understanding before vinifying — manual labor as a basic principle

"You have to understand your vineyards first in order to make good wines," is Kuhn's often-quoted motto — and it aptly describes his way of working. All grapes are harvested by hand. In the cellar, Kuhn relies on gentle gravity processing and long, deliberately slow aging, often in traditional large wooden barrels made of local oak. Barrels that need even more time are occasionally left on the lees for another year — out of conviction, not routine. All wines are vinified dry.

The philosophy of craftsmanship is complemented by ecological measures in the vineyard. The winery is supported by the Rhineland-Palatinate EULLE program for its organic farming — a clear signal of the direction in which the business is developing. The soils around Laumersheim, Großkarlbach, and Dirmstein provide the necessary geological foundation: limestone rock, loess loam, and calcareous marl force the vines to root deeply and shape the mineral basic character of the wines.

Riesling and red wine on an equal footing — an assortment without a weak point

What distinguishes Philipp Kuhn from many colleagues: the assortment is convincing on both sides — white and red are each planted about half and half. For the white wines, Riesling from top sites such as the Laumersheimer Kirschgarten, Steinbuckel, and Burgweg are at the center, complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and the aromatic Muscat varieties. The Riesling Große Gewächse rely on mineral tension, dense acidity structure, and high aging potential — limestone as a marker of origin, flint in the finish.

The red wine palette ranges from Pinot Noir and Early Pinot Noir to Saint Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The assortment is clearly structured: fresh everyday wines, rich reserves, and the age-worthy Große Gewächse follow a well-thought-out structure — also recognizable by the three capsule colors blue, silver, and gold, which directly signal drinking maturity and quality level. In addition, there are specialties such as the Blanc de Noir and the Goldmuskateller Sekt Brut Nature, which show that Kuhn also has a sure hand beyond the classic still wine categories.

What our customers say

We enjoyed this Chardonnay Reserve in the Michelin-starred restaurant “Intense” in Kallstadt almost throughout a wonderful, multi-course menu, were very happy with it and therefore looked for it immediately afterwards. We found what we were looking for at vinoscout.
