Walsheimer Silberberg Chardonnay Grand Reserve

Walsheimer Silberberg Chardonnay Grand Reserve
Limestone soil, Burgundy barrel, Palatinate — the Walsheimer Silberberg Chardonnay Grand Réserve from Karl Pfaffmann shows what this combination can achieve: a structured white wine with real depth and a long finish.
The single vineyard site Walsheimer Silberberg in southern Rhineland-Palatinate has an unusually high limestone content in the soil—similar to conditions in the Côte de Beaune. It is precisely this subsoil that gives the Chardonnay its mineral character and aging potential. Karl Pfaffmann ages the grapes in small French oak barrels, which lends the wine richness and complexity without dominating it.
In the glass, the aroma profile unfolds in two layers: ripe fruit of mango, yellow apple, and quince, with a distinct citrus note underneath—and above it, a creamy, spicy layer of toasted brioche, vanilla, hazelnut, and a hint of flint. The mouthfeel is full-bodied with a light creaminess; the acidity remains present and keeps the wine fresh. The finish is long, mineral, and subtly nutty.
- Dishes: Veal medallions with morel sauce, lobster, mature Comté cheese or a risotto with white truffle
- Temperature: 12–14 °C
- Occasion: Festive dinner or quiet evening with a glass as the main event

Walsheim, Southern Palatinate – Latitude 49°14'01", Longitude 8°07'20". Behind these coordinates lies a small village that hardly anyone knows at first glance, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. Here, between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain, the Karl Pfaffmann winery grows its grapes – in a corner of the Palatinate blessed with plenty of sun, a mild climate, and deep soils.
The Southern Palatinate is one of the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany. You can tell by the wines: they have body, ripeness, and a directness that requires no long explanations. Karl Pfaffmann utilizes this potential and keeps returning to one fundamental idea – wine that tells the story of its origin.
