Markus Pfaffmann Riesling semi-dry

Founded by Karl Pfaffmann, the expertise and skill of the Markus Pfaffmann winery now lie in the hands of his son, Markus. Markus Pfaffmann's white wines are cool-tasting, mostly dry, minerally fresh, and of the highest quality. The single vineyard site Herrenberg is located south of Walsheim in the Nussdorf district. The soils there consist predominantly of sandy loess loam with limestone in the deeper layers. The grapes harvested there are gently pressed after only a short maceration period and fermented under controlled conditions at around 17°C in stainless steel tanks. This allows the grape's fruit to develop optimally in the wine and present itself with effortless grace. The unique feature of this otherwise dry Riesling range is the beautiful, dynamic interplay between freshness and a touch more fruit sweetness. Become a devoted fan of off-dry wines, and perhaps together we can convert many a purist dry wine drinker. The greenish-yellow color already hints at the aromas of star fruit, kiwi, white peach, and a subtle minerality. On the palate, it is impressively clear, fresh, and with a lovely length. "Undecided? Then pick any wine from Markus Pfaffmann – you won't regret it. What sounds far-fetched is actually true: you won't find any duds in this not exactly small estate of 60 hectares." Gault & Millau 2013

Karl Pfaffmann

Walsheim, Southern Palatinate – Latitude 49°14'01", Longitude 8°07'20". Behind these coordinates lies a small village that hardly anyone knows at first glance, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. Here, between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain, the Karl Pfaffmann winery grows its grapes – in a corner of the Palatinate blessed with plenty of sun, a mild climate, and deep soils.

The Southern Palatinate is one of the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany. You can tell by the wines: they have body, ripeness, and a directness that requires no long explanations. Karl Pfaffmann utilizes this potential and keeps returning to one fundamental idea – wine that tells the story of its origin.
