Tinta Cão – old grape variety from the Douro Valley
Tinta Cão is one of the oldest indigenous varieties of Portugal and has become rare even in the Douro Valley today. At Vinoscout, you will find two wines with this grape variety – as a red wine and as a port wine – starting at 12.95 euros.
Origin & Character
The variety originates from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, where it has grown for centuries in field blend vineyards on slate and granite soils. Because of its low yields and late ripening, many winemakers have abandoned it in favor of more productive varieties – those who still grow it do so out of conviction. In the glass, Tinta Cão shows a fine, cool fruit: red berries, pomegranate, a hint of violet. The tannins are present but silky, the acidity lively and structural. As a component of port wine cuvées, it brings elegance and freshness that gives the blend length.
