Bairrada liegt im Westen von Portugal nahe der Atlantikküste. Die Wein-Region bildet einen DOC-Bereich. DOC steht für kontrollierte Ursprungsbezeichnung. Bairrada ist ein Wein-Anbaugebiet, welches von einer langen Tradition geprägt wird. Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts erfreute sich England an den schweren, tanninreichen Rotweinen aus Bairrada. Die Weine wurden in England als Portwein bezeichnet oder mit einem verschnitten. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass der ehemalige Ministerpräsident von Portugal Marquis de Bombal die Rebflächen roden ließ. Erst 1979 wurden die Rebflächen in der Wein-Region Bairrada wieder aufgebaut. Heutzutage besitzt die DOC-Region eine Rebfläche von rund 15.000 Hektar. Durch das vom Atlantik geprägte Klima und die Kalkböden, bringt Bairrada kräftige Rotweine und elegante, frische Weißweine hervor. Bei den weißen Rebsorten dominieren die Trauben Bical und Fernao Pires. Die rote Rebsorte Baga, aus der hervorragende Rotweine hervorgehen, bedeckt mehr als 70 % der gesamten Rebfläche in der Wein-Region. Die regionale Rebsorte Baga muss in den DOC-Weinen aus Bairrada zu mindestens 70 % enthalten sein. Weine dieser Rebsorte weisen eine kräftige, tanninreiche und säurehaltige Struktur auf. Die Rotweine entzücken mit Aromen von Waldbeeren und Pflaumen, so wie mit leichten Noten von Heu, Tabak, Rauch und Kaffee.
