Niepoort The Senior Port Tawny Reserve

A Tawny Reserve from Niepoort — aged oxidatively, approachable yet with real depth. Anyone familiar with classic Port knows: Tawny is the opposite of heavy.

Niepoort is one of the most prestigious port producers in the Douro Valley, family-owned since 1842 and now run by the fifth generation. The Senior is their entry into the world of Tawny Port—open and approachable, yet expertly crafted. For the Reserva classification, the wine is aged for at least seven years in small wooden casks (known as pipes), which imparts its characteristic color and nuttiness.

In the glass, it displays the typical brick red color with orange highlights—a sure sign of oxidative aging. The nose offers aromas of dried figs, hazelnut, and a hint of orange peel. On the palate, it is velvety, with a mild sweetness and flavors of caramel, dried apricot, and walnut. The finish is warm and pleasantly long.

Serving suggestion: Serve chilled at 12–14 °C. Classic with pan-seared foie gras, but equally convincing with Roquefort cheese, walnut cake, or crème brûlée. Also enjoyable neat as a digestif—a down-to-earth end to a good dinner.
