From artist-founder to a benchmark address on the Douro
Adriano Ramos Pinto was 21 years old when he founded his house in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1880 — on the other side of the river, directly opposite Porto, where the great port wine cellars have been maturing for centuries. The young entrepreneur was himself rooted in artistic circles and understood early on that quality and communication are two sides of the same coin. His striking advertising posters, designed by Portuguese and international artists, made the brand visible throughout Europe — and especially in Brazil, where Ramos Pinto accounted for around half of all its own imports until the 1920s. In 1896, Adriano brought his brother António, a photographer, into the company as a partner. The house grew over generations; in 1990, Ramos Pinto joined the Maison Louis Roederer — a champagne dynasty known for its consistent quality policy. Since then, the group has strengthened investments in vineyards and cellar technology without compromising the historical character of the house.
Four Quintas, one principle: no purchased grapes
Ramos Pinto opted for self-sufficiency early on and sources all grapes exclusively from its own vineyards. The four Quintas are spread across two sub-regions of the Douro with fundamentally different conditions: Quinta do Bom Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga are located in the Cima Corgo on slate terraces; the central vinification center is also located there. In the Douro Superior, the hotter, drier upper reaches of the river, the Quinta de Ervamoira extends over 200 hectares — with sites between 110 and 340 meters above sea level. Finally, the Quinta dos Bons Ares lies on granite soils at a significantly cooler altitude, which gives it an aromatic freshness that the other estates cannot provide. This combination of slate and granite, of heat and high-altitude coolness, allows the house to represent all classic port styles with its own raw material base. As a long-standing cellar master, João Nicolau de Almeida has decisively shaped the vinification: He pushed forward the research into autochthonous grape varieties in the Douro and, together with scientific partners, developed a systematic program for variety selection — foundational work that still influences the understanding of the entire wine-growing region today.
Port wine in all its varieties, Douro still wine as a second strength
The range at Ramos Pinto spans from the accessible Fine Tawny to the matured Aged Tawny — the latter in 10-, 20-, and 30-year-old bottlings from oxidative aging in small wooden barrels. Ruby and Late Bottled Vintage styles complement the portfolio on the fruit-driven side; the White Port line, including a 20-year-old white, stands for the aromatic breadth of the house. All ports are prepared in the vinification center at the Quintas — fermentation, fortification, initial aging — before the barrels are brought to the historical storage cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, where oxidative aging continues under controlled conditions. Since 1990, the house has also been producing dry still wines under the Duas Quintas label with the Douro DOC appellation: a white and a red cuvée from Cima Corgo and Douro Superior sites, which show that the house's raw material expertise extends far beyond port wine.
