About Van Zeller Wine Collection

From Quinta do Noval to their own company: the restart of the van Zeller family

The van Zellers have been trading in wine and port wine from the Douro for more than 400 years. The first evidence of this is in wine registers from the early 17th century. For a long time, the family owned Quinta do Noval, from which the legendary 1931 Nacional vintage originates. In 1993, the family sold the estate to a French corporation.

In 1996, Fernando Luiz van Zeller founded Barão de Vilar – Vinhos SA. The basis was a stock of matured port wines that he handed over to his sons Fernando and Álvaro. The company name takes up the title Barão de Vilar, which Queen Maria II had awarded to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke in 1836. The first port wines came onto the market in 1998. Since 2008, the house has been bottling DOC Douro wines in addition to port, and in 2023 they overtook port in sales volume. In 2024, Barão de Vilar became the Van Zeller Wine Collection. Barão de Vilar remains as a brand. The company headquarters is in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Slate soils, hand-picking, and an oenologist from the Noval school

Fernando van Zeller runs the company, his brother Álvaro is responsible for the wine. Álvaro studied agronomy in São Paulo and oenology in Bordeaux. At 28, he took over the cellar work at Quinta do Noval. The brothers' goal: to preserve the family's knowledge, prioritize quality over quantity, and combine tradition with modern cellar technology. The vines traditionally stand on the slate soils of the Douro. The business includes, among others, Quinta do Saião in Vila Nova de Foz Côa.

The Iron Maiden Darkest Red shows what this looks like in the cellar. The grapes are picked by hand and strictly selected. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Part of the wine matures in used port wine barrels.

Port, Douro DOC, and a red wine for Iron Maiden

The range includes port wines and dry Douro wines. Under the umbrella of the Collection, in addition to Barão de Vilar, there are also brands such as Palmer, Feuerheerd's, Maynard's, ZOM, Kaputt, and Vilarissa.

The collaboration with Iron Maiden is the best known. The Darkest Red was created together with the band and is named after one of their songs. It is a cuvée from the Douro varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão and has 13.5% vol. In the glass, blackberry, black cherry, and plum appear, along with spice notes, structured tannins, and a long finish. Serve it at 16 to 18 °C with roasted meat, game, or strong cheese.
