Herdade do Esporão —
Alentejo wines with attitude
Herdade do Esporão is located in the heart of the Alentejo, embedded in Portugal's vast Montado ecosystem — a landscape of cork oaks, red earth, and a dry continental climate that gives wines an unmistakable density and warmth. On nearly 700 hectares of vineyards, around 40 varieties grow, including classic Alentejo grape varieties like Aragonez and Trincadeira, but also less common varieties that the winery specifically researches and develops.
What distinguishes Esporão from many operations in the region is a consistently non-conformist attitude: instead of relying on proven formulas, they continuously experiment here — in vineyard work as well as in the cellar. In addition to the wines, the estate produces olive oils from four varieties as well as products from its own orchards and gardens, all carrying the same claim to origin and craftsmanship.
The wines show what the Alentejo can do when given space: fully ripe fruit, earthy depth, a body that pairs with grilled lamb, braised dishes, or strong hard cheese — and an independence that you can feel in the glass.
