Pinot Gris – the white wine with a special character
Pinot Gris is a grape variety with many faces and even more names: Pinot Gris in France, Pinot Grigio in Italy, and Grauer Ruländer in older German wine books – all referring to the same fascinating grape. Its German name comes from the delicate grey hue of the berries, which shimmer between reddish-violet and bluish-grey depending on ripeness. Although the grapes are colored, Pinot Gris is classified as a white wine – a small paradox that is part of its charm.
The grape variety originates in Burgundy, in eastern France. However, few countries have embraced it as much as Germany: with approximately 7,500 hectares under cultivation, Germany is one of the world's largest producers of Pinot Gris. Globally, the grape variety also finds enthusiastic winemakers and wine lovers in France, Austria, Australia, and New Zealand.
Where Pinot Gris thrives best
This grape variety is demanding: its thin-skinned berries are sensitive to climate fluctuations and require meticulous work in the vineyard. Even minor damage to the berry skin causes the juice to be released prematurely. In return, it rewards the patient winemaker with exceptional depth. It thrives best on calcareous and stony soils – and German wine regions offer precisely these in abundance.
