Character and wine style
The Ahr is considered one of Germany's most fascinating red wine regions. The narrow river valley, characterized by slate cliffs, creates a microclimate that offers Spätburgunder extraordinary conditions: the wines often show an elegant, cool fruit, fine structure, and a characteristic minerality that is owed to the slate rock of the subsoil. Anyone who appreciates the Burgundian style – profound, multi-layered, with aging potential – will enjoy Ahr red wines.
Classification
The growing area is small, the best sites are sought-after. In addition to Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder can also be found on the Ahr, an older relative of the Burgundy family with its own, somewhat softer character.
