Frühburgunder QbA dry
The Frühburgunder from Meyer-Näkel shows why this old German grape variety is getting so much attention right now: lighter-footed than Pinot Noir, but with astonishing depth and an independent fruit language.
The Meyer-Näkel winery in the Ahr Valley has been one of the defining addresses for red Pinot Noir in Germany for decades. Werner Näkel helped shape the Ahr as a red wine region, and his daughters Meike and Dörte continue the business consistently today — with the same demand for precision in the cellar.
In the glass, the wine opens with sweet cherry, mirabelle plum, and a hint of yeast cake — almost brioche-like, warm and inviting. On the palate, it surprises with real liveliness: finely juicy texture, invigorating freshness, yet firm pressure without heaviness. The tannins are velvety integrated, the extract sweetness seems integrated rather than intrusive. The finish is mineral and long — mirabelle and red fruit remain.
Serving suggestion: Served slightly chilled (15–16 °C), this Frühburgunder is most enjoyable. Pairs well with boiled veal, roasted leg of lamb with herbs, porcini mushroom risotto, or a mature Comté. Also a clear recommendation as a companion to lighter game dishes.
