Buy port wine – the great classic from the Douro
Hardly any wine in the world carries as much history, warmth and character as port wine. It comes from the Alto Douro, one of the oldest demarcated wine regions on earth, where the vines grow on steep slate rock under extreme conditions. It owes its name to the port city of Porto, through which it was shipped to the world for centuries – and which remains inextricably linked to it to this day. Anyone who wants to buy port wine is choosing one of the most versatile and fascinating wines of all.
Character and styles – more than just sweet
Port wine is not a monolithic wine, but a whole family of different characters. What all styles have in common: During fermentation, brandy (Aguardente) is added to the must. This stops the fermentation, preserves natural fruit sugar and raises the alcohol content to about 19–22% vol. The result is a wine with fruity sweetness, depth and an unmistakable warmth.
Ruby – fruity and powerful
The Ruby Port is the most accessible style: deep red, full-fruited, with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries and chocolate. It matures for a relatively short time in the barrel and thus preserves its lively fruit. Ideal for beginners and as a dessert companion.
Tawny – nutty and oxidatively aged
The Tawny Port spends many years in small wooden barrels. Due to the controlled oxygen contact, it develops its typical amber tint and a complex bouquet of dried fruits, nuts, caramel and orange peel. The longer the maturation, the more elegant and multi-layered the wine.
Vintage Port – the premium class
In exceptional years, the Quintas declare a Vintage Port: a wine of the highest concentration, which matures to perfection in the bottle after short barrel storage. Dark fruit, spices, leather and a velvety structure make it one of the most impressive wines in the world.
Origin and production
The Douro is one of the most demanding wine regions of all. The vines grow on steep slate, which stores heat and drains water quickly – stress that forces the grapes to form intense aromas. Native grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and others shape the unmistakable character of port wine. The grapes are traditionally harvested by hand, as the steep slopes do not allow for machine harvesting. The addition of Aguardente to the fermenting must has been the method for centuries that makes port wine what it is: a fortified wine with natural residual sugar and long shelf life.
Which dishes and occasions does port wine go with?
