Hungary – Tokaj and the art of noble sweet wine
When it comes to Hungary, there is no way around Tokaj. The region in the northeast of the country is considered one of the oldest and most renowned wine regions in the world – and rightly so. This is where the legendary Tokaji Aszú is created, a noble sweet wine made from botrytized Furmint grape berries that has delighted kings and connoisseurs for centuries. The puttonyos number on the label provides information about the sweetness and concentration: the higher the number, the more intense and complex the wine.
In addition to Aszú, you will also encounter Szamorodni in Tokaj – a style that can be dry or sweet depending on the vintage and shows the character of the region in its own, unadulterated way. The Furmint grape variety is at the center of this: it produces both the great sweet wines and dry white wines that impress with lively acidity and depth.
